Fanatec Announces Console Support

When the Playstation 4 and Xbox One were first announced, one major question the sim racing community had was “Will my hardware work on the next-gen consoles?” Thrustmaster customers were somewhat in luck, as the T500RS racing wheel was supported on some Playstation 4 titles, but Fanatec users felt somewhat jilted, with no support announced.

That’s officially changed! Slightly Mad Studios has announced that they will support Fanatec hardware on Project CARS, across ALL THREE platforms (PC, PS4, Xbox One)! Best of all, older Fanatec products will work with the current-gen hardware.

PC + Playstation 4 Compatible Fanatec Products

  • Porsche 911 Turbo S
  • Porsche 911 GT2
  • Porsche 911 GT3 RS V2
  • CSR
  • CSR Elite

PC + Playstation 4 + Xbox One

  • Clubsport Wheel Base
  • Clubsport Wheel Base V2

I find this announcement somewhat ironic, with Fanatec’s two “Official Forza Motorsport Wheels” not working on the Xbox One, but working on the Playstation 4. But now the CSW V1, which only had Playstation and PC compatibility, will now be compatible with the Xbox One, which is a plus.

While the announcement is only tied in with Project CARS, I think it is safe to assume that means Fanatec will officially be supporting current-gen racing titles. However, that raises some questions: Logitech stated that the reason they are not doing current-gen support is that there’s a prohibitive “Security Chip”. How is Fanatec getting around it?

Regardless, it’s nice to see Fanatec doing some investment protection, and making true to their promise that they will be adding support to their wheels. I will assume this will be added via a firmware update, likely closer to Project CARS’ release.

What are your thoughts on Fanatec’s added wheel compatibility? Let us know!
