Back in February, iRacing announced that the GTE class of racing would be making its way to iRacing, starting off with the Ferrari 488 GTE race car. Now, Tony Gardner has announced that another car is coming to the online racing service, the 2017 Ford GT GTE. The surprising thing about the announcement is that it is not just an announcement that the car is “in progress”, but that the car (along with the Ferrari) is actually complete!
The Ford GT GTE race car competed in the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, which sparked the revival of the legendary Ford vs Ferrari rivalry, spanning back decades. The Ford GT took home the victory in the GTE-Pro class, with a Ferrari spoiling a Ford 1-2-3 finish. The car, reclassified as a GTLM racer, also took home the class victory in the 2017 24 Hours of Daytona.
As of right now, both the Ford GT GTE, as well as the Ferrari 488 GTE, are submitted to their respective manufacturers for approval. This could take anywhere between a “few days to a few weeks”, but the goal is to have one, if not both, cars available in the June Build.
That would also be right in time for the iRacing 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is set to kick off June 10th! If one (or both) cars are completed in time, they will replace the Ford GT GT2 race car in the one-off event. Then, for regular season events, they will replace the GT3 cars in the IMSA Championship. The Ford and/or Ferrari will compete alongside the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in the GTE class.
